S.O.S.-Help us save Spillers!

With the internet making internet making music ever easier to obtain and the souless highstreet chains dropping prices in a desperate scramble to keep up it's the small, independant record shops that are suffering. Without the clout to undercut the big names, they'rev finding their sales dwindling as people who just want the chart-friendly fodder take their money elsewhere. Forget stores with character, knowledgable staff and albums by obscure bands. Soon we will all be buying the same records in big, gleaming, aircraft hangars like HMV or Virgin Megastore.

Now it seems even the world's oldest record shop, Cardiff's own Spillers records, is under threat. The current owner, Nick Todd, has put it up for sale and if no buyer is found by March then it will close its doors for the last time. Make no mistake, there will be no government grants to save this little bit of history, the national trust aren't queuing up to buy it. If somebody doesn't step in the worlds oldest record shop will be no more.

The crazy thing is, Spillers hasn't fallen on hard times, it isn't closing because no one shops there any more. It's heaving every Saturday. Mr Todd is having to sell up because of a divorce settlement. You can check out the story here at the BBC news website:

The aim of S.O.S. is to save this, the oldest music related business in the world, from extinction. Can you help? Get in touch.
